Communicating between programmable logic controllers (PLCs) from different vendors and with other peripheral devices on the same system presents difficulties. Industrial IoT companies rely on remote devices to control, monitor and maintain the health of their systems. The RTU, or remote terminal unit, transmits telemetry data to the PLC via the DCS or SCADA system and uses messages from them to control connected objects. For example, oil and gas companies need to know the status of pressure and volume on their pipeline. They may need to open or close valves depending on the conditions, which operators would do by communicating with the RTUs.When updates to the hardware were required, these companies were faced with limited options. They could either buy more devices from the same vendor, which was restrictive. Or, they could purchase from another manufacturer and then invest more time and money to have their SCADA integrator reprogrammed.

In order to improve customer service and operations across its region, one of the largest integrated utilities in the United States has rolled out the C3 AI Suite and C3 AMI Operations application on AWS. Con Edison’s project objectives were to deliver on the utility’s commitments for presenting customer data, establish AMI operations across 5 million smart meters to ensure operational health, and build a federated data image platform for analytic capabilities. The utility’s smart meter deployment will generate between 100 terabytes and 1 petabyte of data per year, so choosing a platform that could scale and continue to perform analytics on an ever-larger data set was vital.

However, these designs won’t work for the future of satellite broadband and millimeter-wave 5G.For satellite internet to work properly, the end-user—who may be on the ground, in a moving car or boat, or even an aircraft— needs a constant line of sight to the satellite. The satellite itself moves across the sky, and the user may be repeatedly handed over from satellite to satellite.The problem for 5G is similar. The omnidirectional approach used by earlier generations is not appropriate, especially for the very high frequencies used in millimeter-wave 5G. At these frequencies, spanning from 24 GHz to 53 GHz, loss from waves passing through the air and other materials is much higher.ALCAN Systems was founded in 2016 with a mission to create a low-cost smart antenna system for cellular and satellite communication. They developed an innovative new approach using phased- array antennas, using liquid crystal display (LCD) technology to precisely control the time delay and phase shift between the elements. LCD technology can be made much more compactly, efficiently and cheaply than traditional phased arrays, and can be manufactured on the same production lines as LCD televisions.

Mondi Implements Statistics-Based Health Monitoring and Predictive Maintenance
The extrusion and other machines at Mondi’s plant are large and complex, measuring up to 50 meters long and 15 meters high. Each machine is controlled by up to five programmable logic controllers (PLCs), which log temperature, pressure, velocity, and other performance parameters from the machine’s sensors. Each machine records 300–400 parameter values every minute, generating 7 gigabytes of data daily.Mondi faced several challenges in using this data for predictive maintenance. First, the plant personnel had limited experience with statistical analysis and machine learning. They needed to evaluate a variety of machine learning approaches to identify which produced the most accurate results for their data. They also needed to develop an application that presented the results clearly and immediately to machine operators. Lastly, they needed to package this application for continuous use in a production environment.
