Predicting Rare Failures in Hydro Turbines
Utility companies that operate hydro turbines have a vested interest in performing regular maintenance to prevent unexpected failures. Most maintenance occurs on a scheduled basis where the asset is taken offline, inspected, and repaired proactively if needed. Hydro turbine units are highly reliable, meaning that few examples of unplanned downtime exist. However, these failures are very costly to their operators.Given the sensitivity operators have to unplanned downtime, many have equipped turbines and generators with sensors and platforms to collect valuable performance information in real-time. But because there are so few historical hydro failures to compare against, rich streaming data and legacy statistics-based analysis are not very accurate at predicting true failure events. In fact, they often create more problems by overloading monitoring teams with benign false positives that result in unnecessary downtime to evaluate. This begs the question: Can artificial intelligence help maintenance teams extract more value out of their data?

U.S. Venture + Dataiku: Upskilling Analysts to Save Thousands of Hours
The Data and Analytics team at U.S. Venture began in 2018. At the time, the team was doing data warehousing and basic reporting, but soon realized they needed the right people and tools to do advanced analytics at scale — maintaining models and disparate data sources were going to become unmanageable quickly without them. That was their initial pain point: They had people that could have built solutions from scratch for DataOps (but no automation surrounding data collection, prep, and model connectivity) — but it wasn’t the time to reinvent the wheel.Further, the team’s data scientists and analysts were using a varied set of tools and coding mechanisms — one data scientist used R, one used Python, some analysts were using SQL while others used Python, and so on. Resultantly, the individual team members built their own components that lived in different places and were created via their own tools, saved on personal computers, with no visibility for other team members about where projects were and how they were created or functioned. This prevented them from supporting each other and collaborating on projects.

Solebit (MimeCast) provides identification and prevention of zero-day malware and unknown threats.From the moment when we joined the project, there were automation tests designed and developed by the in-house development team. Tests were not useful because every time a developer triggered the tests, it was by hand in a terminal. As the result, the team had a big and complicated file with the results.Also, the tests took more than 20 hours to complete, and the history of the build was also unavailable.The test suite architecture was unscalable, making it difficult to maintain a large number of test machines.The task was to create a simple runner for tests and increase their speed. We learned some valuable lessons. We should have redesigned the architecture to support cloud platform integration, made the tests run much more easily, and generated a clean report with all the necessary details.At the same time, we should propose improvements for the current testing process and made some manual testing, too.
