IoT System for Tunnel Construction - NI Industrial IoT Case Study
IoT System for Tunnel Construction
NI
The Zenitaka Corporation ('Zenitaka') has two major business areas: its architectural business focuses on structures such as government buildings, office buildings, and commercial facilities, while its civil engineering business is targeted at structures such as tunnels, bridges and dams. Within these areas, there presented two issues that have always persisted in regard to the construction of mountain tunnels. These issues are 'improving safety" and "reducing energy consumption". Mountain tunnels construction requires a massive amount of electricity. This is because there are many kinds of electrical equipment being used day and night, including construction machinery, construction lighting, and ventilating fan. Despite this, the amount of power consumption is generally not tightly managed. In many cases, the exact amount of power consumption is only ascertained when the bill from the power company becomes available. Sometimes, corporations install demand-monitoring equipment to help curb the maximum power demanded. However, even in these cases, the devices only allow the total volume of power consumption to be ascertained, or they may issue warnings to prevent the contracted volume of power from being exceeded. In order to tackle the issue of reducing power consumption, it was first necessary to obtain an accurate breakdown of how much power was being used in each particular area. In other words, we needed to be able to visualize the amount of power being consumed. Safety, was also not being managed very rigorously. Even now, tunnel construction sites often use a 'name label' system for managing entry into the work site. Specifically, red labels with white reverse sides that bear the workers' names on both sides are displayed at the tunnel work site entrance. The workers themselves then flip the name label to the appropriate side when entering or exiting from the work site to indicate whether or not they are working inside the tunnel at any given time. If a worker forgets to flip his or her name label when entering or exiting from the tunnel, management cannot be performed effectively. In order to tackle the challenges mentioned above, Zenitaka decided to build a system that could improve the safety of tunnel construction as well as reduce the amount of power consumed. In other words, this new system would facilitate a clear picture of which workers were working in each location at the mountain tunnel construction site, as well as which processes were being carried out at those respective locations at any given time. The system would maintain the safety of all workers while also carefully controlling the electrical equipment to reduce unnecessary power consumption. Having decided on the concept, our next concern was whether there existed any kind of robust hardware that would not break down at the construction work site, that could move freely in response to changes in the working environment, and that could accurately detect workers and vehicles using radio frequency identification (RFID). Given that this system would involve many components that were new to Zenitaka, we decided to enlist the cooperation of E.I.Sol Co., Ltd. ('E.I.Sol') as our joint development partner, as they had provided us with a highly practical proposal.

HEINEKEN Uses the Cloud to Reach 10.5 Million Consumers
For 2012 campaign, the Bond promotion, it planned to launch the campaign at the same time everywhere on the planet. That created unprecedented challenges for HEINEKEN—nowhere more so than in its technology operation. The primary digital content for the campaign was a 100-megabyte movie that had to play flawlessly for millions of viewers worldwide. After all, Bond never fails. No one was going to tolerate a technology failure that might bruise his brand.Previously, HEINEKEN had supported digital media at its outsourced datacenter. But that datacenter lacked the computing resources HEINEKEN needed, and building them—especially to support peak traffic that would total millions of simultaneous hits—would have been both time-consuming and expensive. Nor would it have provided the geographic reach that HEINEKEN needed to minimize latency worldwide.

Greater Peace of Mind with Pentair
When severe weather hits, the potential damage to a home could be disastrous. Insurance claims for flooding damage exceed $3 billion per year in the United States, and most homeowners are not even covered for even basic water damage to carpet, drywall, electrical, furniture and personal items. Sump pumps are one of the best defenses against flood damage, but when storms knock out electricity, traditional sump pumps are rendered useless. As a seller of water management and equipment protection, Pentair sought a communication platform that will support a wide range of Pentair Internet-connected products.

An IoT Software Suite to Connect Products to Customers' Business
Solair started in Italy in 2011 with the observation that enterprise software severely lagged behind consumer software in affordability and simplicity. They have worked with customers in many industries including smart cities, manufacturing, industrial machinery and retail. Solair has recently begun to expand to do business mainly in Japan, Germany and the United States.“There are still many companies that don’t completely understand how to benefit from the potential advantages of connected products and they are looking for ready to use solutions that are quick to implement and bring measurable economic results,” said Martina Casani, Marketing Director, Solair. With a background in enterprise software, Solair now focuses on addressing business needs through end-to-end IoT solutions including an IoT Platform, a suite of IoT software modules and an IoT Gateway. “We started on the software side of IoT, but our customers were asking us for help on the hardware side,” said Casani. “We began to integrate an IoT Gateway in addition to software to help our customers from start to finish as they build an IoT application that collects data from the edge and brings it to the cloud.”

Eco-Friendly, Engaging SAVORTEX Transforms the IoT - Intel Industrial IoT Case Study
Eco-Friendly, Engaging SAVORTEX Transforms the IoT
Of the 70 million corporate washrooms, 20 percent are equipped with environmentally unfriendly, inefficient, and unhygienic hand-dryers and around 80 percent offer expensive paper towels that create three million tons of waste. As such, reducing building management costs, boosting facility efficiencies, and cutting energy use is very lucrative. SAVORTEX has built the world's first IoT-enabled messaging hand-dryer to disrupt this inefficient sector and transform corporate washrooms into smart spaces. Built on Intel® technology, the SAVORTEX AdDryer* uses the Internet of Things (IoT) to deliver waste savings, alert cleaners to washroom needs based on usage, and engage consumers with tailored, high-definition video messages, allowing enterprises to transform costly commercial washrooms into connected, hygienic, and sustainable revenue-producing assets.ChallengesIngrained issues: High costs, inefficient maintenance, and energy consumption in washrooms make them difficult to manage. SAVORTEX wanted to solve multiple problems at once.Excessive waste: The prevalent drying choice of expensive paper towels significantly impacts the environment in both manufacture and disposal.Status quo: Conventional brushed-motor hand-dryers are energy-hungry and have a short life-expectancy so are costly to run, but finding budget to deploy new solutions on the necessary scale can be difficult.
