Parkeon is a French company that has become a global leader in urban mobility technology over the last 40 years. The company has built its reputation on its core expertise in parking payment solutions, including multi-space parking meters, mobile phone payment, ticket vending machines, fare collection devices, and fare validation. Today, Parkeon has an installed base of approximately 200,000 meters in 3,500 cities across 55 countries. The company is now looking to expand its services beyond ticketing machines for parking spaces, aiming to create a developer ecosystem for meters and provide a platform that enables cities to add new services to their meters.
The Challenge
Parkeon, a global leader in urban mobility technology, had a vision to transform their devices into a new channel for a wide range of city services, creating a developer ecosystem or an 'app store' for meters. The company aimed to create multi-service kiosks that are fully integrated into the Smart City ecosystem, allowing partners to build and deliver additional services through their devices. However, a significant challenge was connecting and integrating these new terminals with the company’s back-office business systems. Parkeon had been using its own network for device connectivity, but with the trend towards the Internet of Things, they realized they needed a more robust connectivity solution than they could build themselves. They needed a solution that could manage deployed meters and integrate the connectivity part of the solution.
The Solution
Parkeon turned to Wind River, a company they had previously worked with and trusted, to provide the robust connectivity solution they needed. Wind River Professional Services, known for their work with organizations worldwide to scope solution requirements and co-create designs, was chosen to deliver the end-to-end solution. Wind River's team, with their unique insights from working on IoT solutions with various clients globally, was equipped to co-design and help integrate the connectivity part of the solution. They were also fully conversant in security requirements and measures, a critical concern for Parkeon as they were handling sensitive banking transactions and personal data. Wind River's solution was easier to integrate with Parkeon's back office architecture, reducing the risk and difficulty of integration.
