About The Customer
SPAR International is a global retail organization that operates in partnership with independent retailers. It works collaboratively to share global scale and expertise to enhance the competitiveness of its retail partners worldwide and build the SPAR brand internationally. With a presence in 48 countries and over 13,000 stores, Spar is a significant player in the retail industry. The company's operations are diverse, with each country having its own unique product naming conventions, supplier and brand relationships, and currency.
The Challenge
Spar International, a global retail giant, faced a significant challenge in building a comprehensive report of its 13,000 stores spread across 48 countries. The complexity arose from the unique product naming conventions, supplier and brand relationships, and currency differences in each country. Additionally, Spar wanted to leverage Nielsen data for competitive analysis, which had its own product categorization that needed to be standardized to fit Spar's reporting. The task of finding a common denominator in all this diverse data, standardizing it, and joining it for reporting was a daunting task.
The Solution
Spar addressed this challenge by building a data workflow that combined Amazon S3 buckets and Designer Cloud. This combination was used to store data and then cleanse, standardize, and join it for reporting in PowerBI. With Designer Cloud, Spar was able to quickly standardize unpredictable retailer data and build a high-level global report that was previously unachievable. Furthermore, Spar leveraged Nielsen data to benchmark store and category performance. The success of this data aggregation project has not only allowed Spar to better understand its global retailers and competitors but has also encouraged the team to ask new, more complex questions that are now possible to answer with this advanced level of reporting.
Operational Impact
  • The implementation of Designer Cloud and Amazon S3 buckets has brought about significant operational benefits for Spar. The ease of use provided by AWS S3 buckets has enabled Spar to collect data more frequently and from more countries. The global retailer report built with Designer Cloud has provided new business insights, shedding light on retailer best practices, consumer habits, and competitor performance. This has helped Spar to grow its bottom line. Furthermore, the success of this data aggregation project has spurred the team to ask new, more complex questions, thereby driving continuous improvement and innovation in their operations.
Quantitative Benefit
  • Spar has analyzed over €250m in yearly sales data that was previously not analyzed.
  • Spar has seen a 12X increase in reporting output.
  • Spar has been able to gather feedback sales data from 48 countries.
