The Challenge
Valued at USD519 billion in 2019, the pulp and paper market is expected to reach USD680 billion by 20271. As this rapid growth continues, plant operators are doubling down on safety standards. Fire protection is a priority. Paper dust is highly combustible, leading to the risk of dust explosions at manufacturing facilities. Operators of a paper pulp mill in eastern Canada recognized that their facility needed enhanced fire protection. The existing system consisted of a vertical turbine pump however facility managers were looking for more comprehensive protection that would meet the future demands of the mill and the peace of mind that it would bring.

About The Customer
The customer is a paper pulp mill in eastern Canada. They recognized the need for enhanced fire protection due to the highly combustible nature of paper dust and the risk of dust explosions. The facility managers were looking for a comprehensive fire protection solution that would meet the future demands of the mill and provide peace of mind.
The Solution
Xylem distributor Pompe Saguenay designed and installed a comprehensive fire protection solution consisting of an AC Fire Pump vertical turbine FP18DMC pump that delivered increased fire protection to the mill. AC Fire Pump vertical turbines are designed for standpipe, sprinkler, chemical mitigation and hydrant systems. AC Fire Pump has been manufacturing fire pumps and systems since the 1880s and is a member of the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA) and the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA). A wide range of state-ofthe-art fire pumps and systems, including prefabricated packages and house units, and space-saving designs that meet every fire protection need are available. Modular construction provides flexibility in selecting the right pump for each application.
Quantitative Benefit
  • The quantitative benefit of the Xylem fire protection solution is the increased capacity of the AC Fire Pump vertical turbine FP18DMC pump, operating at 3000 US gallons per minute (gpm), 160 pounds per square inch (PSI). This ensures that all sprinkler heads can run simultaneously in the event of a fire, providing comprehensive protection to the entire facility.
