Digital Transformation in Metinvest: Implementing OpenText Extended ECM for SAP

Metinvest Holding is a leading steel and mining company with vast iron ore reserves, coal mines, and steelmaking assets in Europe and North America. The company ranks among the top 50 largest steel companies in the world, according to the World Steel Association. Metinvest Digital is the IT Company in Metinvest Group, responsible for overseeing the IT function and all IT processes in the Group, as well as improving the quality of services provided. In addition to supporting IT users, Metinvest Digital works to identify best digital practices that will add value and act as an agent of change.

Metinvest Holding, a global steel and mining company, was facing challenges with its enterprise content management. The company needed to streamline its processes and chose OpenText Extended ECM, an SAP-endorsed solution, as its enterprise content management platform. However, implementing this solution and integrating it into the SAP environment was a complex task. The company's IT arm, Metinvest Digital, partnered with an independent OpenText integrator, N-iX, to help with the implementation. The main challenges included performing a comprehensive system audit, redesigning the tech infrastructure and solution architecture, analyzing and refactoring the source code, migrating users from the old system to the new one, and training users on how to effectively use the system.

N-iX approached the challenge by first conducting a performance audit of the system, which involved a comprehensive analysis from both technical and business perspectives. Following the audit, the team worked on improving the technical infrastructure, creating a cluster of 8 servers for Development and QA landscapes, increasing the total number of servers from 3 to 17. The system was then upgraded to the latest version of OpenText Extended ECM to handle large volumes of data and many users working in parallel. The team also worked on code refactoring and development of new functionality, including the creation of new business workflows, development of custom functionality according to the client’s requirements, and building SAP links for faster access to stored documents. An admin application was developed in Java using Angular 6 to create an intuitive user interface, and a mechanism was developed to ensure the automatic assignment of users to groups of the OpenText Extended ECM system based on their roles in SAP.

• The successful implementation of OpenText Extended ECM for SAP has brought significant operational benefits to Metinvest. The new tech infrastructure and advanced functionality have allowed the company to streamline its operations and improve productivity. The system's improved processing speed, scalability, and flexibility have enabled it to handle large volumes of data and many users working in parallel. The custom functionality developed by N-iX has ensured seamless linking of documents from ECM with business objects in SAP, providing faster access to stored documents and eliminating the need for time-consuming searches. The training provided by N-iX has also empowered users to effectively use the system, further enhancing operational efficiency.
