Building Custom Industrial Applications
Power a revolutionary software platform regardless of network connectivityGE Digital’s software team developed an innovative solution to address these data challenges head-on. The team’s Predix cloud-based platform allows organizations to build tailored mobile apps that help field personnel collect and analyze data from intelligent machines. The initial release of Predix was a great step toward helping field workers monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment. But the GE Digital team also learned that Predix required a data platform that could provide strong stability without relying on internet connectivity

JSW Tracked and Caught Errors Across Multiple Factory Floors in Real-time
JSW’s steel manufacturing is spread over multiple manufacturing plants, each home to dozens of machines of various types. Each machine has numerous sensors tracking multiple data points and supplying event data every 2-3 seconds. Types of data include field maintenance, material consumption, and machine usage. The data is saved in each machine’s database, in a proprietary manufacturer format. Then, each machine transfers data to the central Oracle databases.Although the process works, error reporting and handling are lacking. Because each machine uses its own data protocols, the data transfer processes are “closed” and there’s no standard way of reporting errors as they occur or passing error codes to other systems. Therefore some errors go unnoticed for a very long time. An example is the production of metal with incorrect dimensions. When this error goes unnoticed for a while, it results in financial losses.

Slovenian Smart Factory manages Electricity Consumption
Salonit also has a strong environmental regulation compliance strategy and it is dedicated to optimizing and reducing energy consumption. The goal was to reach the top 10 % of the most energy-efficient cement factories in the European Union. But producing clinker is energy-intensive: its electricity consumption averages 85 GWh, with 2500 Tera Joules of energy used for clinker burning. In the past years, Salonit’s energy bills went up to 9 million EUR per year, mainly for electricity. Salonit needed to comply with European energy regulations. The company could leverage a co-financing mechanism to invest in equipment and monitoring solutions that help meet the energy consumption reduction target.
