Struggling with Web Security ChallengesIn 2016, rather than invest millions of dollars to replace its outdated legacy infrastructure, DOTComm began migrating its sites and applications to a large cloud services provider. The organization also used a cloud-based web application firewall (WAF) along with robust alerting tools that enabled it to monitor for outages.Unfortunately, the WAF did not perform as expected. Over a two-year period, DOTComm experienced more than 10 outages, each of which brought down a subset of the organization’s websites and applications. These outages lasted anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours — an unacceptable amount of time when they impacted the availability of 24/7 mission-critical services related to public safety.Even when the outages affected less mission-critical DOTComm sites and applications, the organization had to deal with complaints from county departments and citizens. Because the WAF vendor refused to take accountability for these outages, Dolinski was forced to pore over his log files to prove that the issue was the vendor’s responsibility. Once engaged with the vendor for support, Dolinski was often frustrated dealing with entry-level personnel lacking deep knowledge of the WAF.To make matters worse, the WAF vendor was supposed to manage DOTComm’s SSL certificate renewals. However, lacking a graceful certificate renewal process, the vendor often failed to renew DOTComm’s certificates before they expired. As a result, DOTComm sites would either go offline or throw SSL errors.As soon as the contract with the WAF vendor expired, Dolinski began evaluating other solutions.

Without a network that could rapidly expand, they would not be able to keep up with global demand. Additional concerns were data located in two different public clouds, the variable network needs depending on regional demand, and difficulty hiring support in regions outside of Talk-Cloud’s home country, China.Online education thrives on interactionAs the globe has become increasingly connected, online education has surged. Teachers can reach students located anywhere as long as they have internet access. Studies show that these students do a better job of retaining material and staying engaged when they have high interaction with their teachers. However, when the video lags and stutters interaction is severely reduced.Video latency becomes noticeable to human perception at around 200 ms. While a few stutters can be ignored, students quickly become disengaged if the lag continues. Due to the live nature of the conversation, pre-buffering is not an option. Latency must be lowered through dynamic routing and edge server usage.

We’ve been implementing it on-premises in Europe for almost 20 years. Several years ago, we also started delivering it as software-as-a-service,” says Service Department Director Grzegorz Mazurek. Challenging times for the energy sector required an efficient solution with RES management, algo-trading, forecasting, and data analytics. The company was working to meet all these targets but believed it could achieve its goals only with Oracle technology.However, when a customer asked to use  LUXtrade in the cloud, Transition Technologies had to scramble to deploy a cloud solution in just six months.

The underlying database used on AWS was PostgreSQL, which is available on OCI. However, as part of the migration, the development team also wanted to address some PostgreSQL shortcomings. In particular, performance optimization was poor, while building an HA setup required substantial expertise. The required additional compute resources forced downtime while users had to manage the underlying block storage that PostgreSQL used. The resulting administrative overhead and required expertise were simply too high.

Could also offer real-time data and an environment that was more attuned to experience rather than tasks, which would differentiate us from our competition.
