The Zenitaka Corporation ('Zenitaka') has two major business areas: its architectural business focuses on structures such as government buildings, office buildings, and commercial facilities, while its civil engineering business is targeted at structures such as tunnels, bridges and dams. Within these areas, there presented two issues that have always persisted in regard to the construction of mountain tunnels. These issues are 'improving safety" and "reducing energy consumption".Mountain tunnels construction requires a massive amount of electricity. This is because there are many kinds of electrical equipment being used day and night, including construction machinery, construction lighting, and ventilating fan. Despite this, the amount of power consumption is generally not tightly managed. In many cases, the exact amount of power consumption is only ascertained when the bill from the power company becomes available. Sometimes, corporations install demand-monitoring equipment to help curb the maximum power demanded. However, even in these cases, the devices only allow the total volume of power consumption to be ascertained, or they may issue warnings to prevent the contracted volume of power from being exceeded. In order to tackle the issue of reducing power consumption, it was first necessary to obtain an accurate breakdown of how much power was being used in each particular area. In other words, we needed to be able to visualize the amount of power being consumed.Safety, was also not being managed very rigorously. Even now, tunnel construction sites often use a 'name label' system for managing entry into the work site. Specifically, red labels with white reverse sides that bear the workers' names on both sides are displayed at the tunnel work site entrance. The workers themselves then flip the name label to the appropriate side when entering or exiting from the work site to indicate whether or not they are working inside the tunnel at any given time. If a worker forgets to flip his or her name label when entering or exiting from the tunnel, management cannot be performed effectively.In order to tackle the challenges mentioned above, Zenitaka decided to build a system that could improve the safety of tunnel construction as well as reduce the amount of power consumed. In other words, this new system would facilitate a clear picture of which workers were working in each location at the mountain tunnel construction site, as well as which processes were being carried out at those respective locations at any given time. The system would maintain the safety of all workers while also carefully controlling the electrical equipment to reduce unnecessary power consumption.Having decided on the concept, our next concern was whether there existed any kind of robust hardware that would not break down at the construction work site, that could move freely in response to changes in the working environment, and that could accurately detect workers and vehicles using radio frequency identification (RFID). Given that this system would involve many components that were new to Zenitaka, we decided to enlist the cooperation of E.I.Sol Co., Ltd. ('E.I.Sol') as our joint development partner, as they had provided us with a highly practical proposal.

Unlike the airline reservation systems with a limited number of global providers like Amadeus, Travelport, Sabre and Share, the ecosystem around the airports and airlines is heavily fragmented. There are no centralized systems that can unify all its stakeholders’ data such as:• Airline• Passengers• Airport vendors like baggage handling companies, fuel and catering providers• Airport tenant (shops, malls etc.)• Parking and ground transportation• Security (TSA) & Regulatory bodiesMany luggage tracking systems at the moment are simply isolated mobile smartphone applications tied into a proprietary third-party web application using such things as Bluetooth baggage tags. The challenge that the Smart Airline Baggage Management testbed is addressing is bringing together and integrating disparate and isolated airline enterprise applications and systems into a single solution to better handle smart baggage across the airline and aviation ecosystems.GOALSThe Smart Airline Baggage Management testbed, part of a broader aviation ecosystem vision, is aimed at reducing the instances of delayed, damaged and lost bags leading to lower economic risk exposure to the airlines; increasing the ability to track and report on baggage including location and weight changes to prevent theft and loss; and improve customer satisfaction through better communication including offering new value-added services to frequent flyers.The testbed is also aimed at helping airlines address the new baggage handling requirements set out by IATA in Resolution 753 requiring airlines to implement more comprehensive acquisition and delivery solutions for baggage tracking and handling by June 2018. This target is also outlined in the broader IATA 2015 White Paper titled “Simplifying the Business.”

Road congestion and strained transportation networks are persistent concerns associated with the rapid urbanization of developing and developed economies. A 2015 study1 reported that travel delays due to traffic congestion led to the waste of 3.1 billion gallons of fuel and a loss of nearly 7 billion extra hours to travelers during rush hour traffic, with a nationwide cost of around $160 billion, or $960 per commuter. Alleviating traffic congestion, in addition to improving safety, is leading public and private organizations to explore new mobility paradigms such as ride-share autonomous vehicles.GOALThe goal of the Connected Vehicle Urban Traffic Management (CVUTM) testbed is to create a smart road traffic ecosystem featuring connected vehicles using vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies, sensor fusion, industrial IoT platforms, cloud infrastructure, and edge analytics. This testbed will serve to preempt road congestion, automatically detect unusual eventson the road, and enable cooperative movement of traffic. In due course, both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles will participate in this ecosystem with a goal of minimizing road congestion and improve overall improving motorist and pedestrian safety.

China Steel Corporation (CSC) is the largest integrated steel maker in Taiwan. Our goal is to enhance facility maintenance and management efficiency. First and foremost, to achieve this goal we know we need to understand the tradeoffs between the set-up costs of machine condition monitoring (MCM) devices and the losses we experience due to unexpected faults. We also need to consider the critical pieces of equipment we own and the degree of difficulty involved in maintaining them. Effective MCM can help maintenance managers understand the condition of critical equipment in real time, which is a competitive advantage for steel manufacturers.Our first self-developed facility online monitoring and diagnosis system (FOMOS) was installed on the CSC production line in 1998. The system performed well for monitoring certain issues such as mill vibrations, but after a few years the system became less reliable. We found that the hardware and software had limited functionality. We knew we could build a smarter, more connected system that could use the latest advances in processing power, wireless networks, and software connectivity. We realized that it was fairly easy to develop an MCM system, but it was difficult to address specific challenges we faced.Our biggest challenge to address was how to detect equipment abnormalities at an early stage without creating a large number of false alarms. Since vibration is a relative condition indicator and strongly affected by system or structural dynamic rigidity and transmissibility, in real situations, it is common to find that two pieces of the same equipment at similar locations and operating conditions exhibit different vibration levels after several years of operation. Vibration signals can be a key indicator for information such as wear, imbalance, misalignment, impact load, and bearing fault by using different signal processing and algorithms.A conventional monitoring and diagnosis system uses the same or very few indicators and criteria to monitor and diagnose various machine conditions regardless of the nature of the operation of the machine. Therefore, these systems are prone to false alarms or missing alarms. To make it worse, with diverse monitored equipment, a complicated operation regime, and widespread applications in numerous process lines in an integrated steel factory, it is impractical to achieve our goals with only a few diagnosis experts. Thus, we discovered the best way to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of our MCM system was to introduce some artificial intelligence methods.

As the HCI market has grown increasingly crowded, Springpath sought to differentiate itself by providing enhanced serviceability to its customers. But it was lacking in its ability to provide fast customer issue resolution for both hardware and software components and in its ability to get meaningful, real-time intelligence from data. Springpath needed to create better operational efficiencies for its support organization. To better service its customers, Springpath would need a solution to resolve customer issues faster while collecting real-time customer data from systems to extract better insights for both internal support teams and end customers alike. Building a solution would require quick ingest and parsing of data – which was at the time often sent in the form of complex log files – and the ability to present it as actionable information. Further, a solution would need to enable support engineers to provide quick issue resolution to minimize downtime. Ideally, Springpath wanted customers to get full visibility into their own systems – and thereby be able to perform timely maintenance tasks – with the goal of maximizing uptime and ensuring optimal system performance. In addition, a solution should integrate with their issue management system, Salesforce.com Service Portal, for easy access for both the in-house support team and end-customers. “Offering world-class Customer Service in the IoT era requires a comprehensive and scalable Analytics platform that is well-integrated with an existing Support workflow,” says Brett Flinchum, VP of Global Customer Success at Springpath.

Enjoy a beer on the upper Texas Gulf Coast, and you can probably thank Del Papa Distributing Company. Founded more than a century ago, the company today distributes 10 million cases of beer annually, from 30 suppliers. More than 375 employees work at headquarters in Texas City and two other distribution centers. The family-owned company has a simple aim: to be a great beer distribution company. So when Del Papa set out to build a new 27-acre headquarters, company leaders thought about how technology could contribute to its greatness. “We wanted the new distribution center to have a single, secure network we could use for physical security, communications, collaboration, and even monitoring the temperature of our inventory,” says Steve Holtsclaw, Manager of Information Systems for Del Papa. The old building, in contrast, had separate networks for voice, data, video, and physical security. Separate networks were expensive and got in the way of business. For example, personnel could only monitor video surveillance cameras from certain workstations. And Wi-Fi performance in the warehouse area wasn’t reliable enough for the voice-activated order-picking system.

Water, after air, is the second most critical natural resource our lives depend upon. Maintaining adequate clean and safe water supply to urban residents has become ever-challenging. This is especially so under the pressure from the rapid urbanization of the populations in developing countries and increasingly severe constraints of available water resources in many parts of the world. The situation is exacerbated by the inadequate and aging equipment deployed in the water supply infrastructure and the ineffectiveness in the management of the operations of the equipment. The consequence of these conditions impacts to the health and quality of lives of millions of urban residents.The prevailing conditions in the urban water supply systems include:• Safety: Inability to timely detect water quality issues that may lead to health problems• Service Availability: Inability to detect, address and prevent, on a timely basis, operational issues that cause unnecessary service outages• Efficiency: Inability to assess and identify water leakages, and to identify and address energy over-consumption in heavy operational assets (e.g. water-pressurizing bumps), both leading to wastefulness of valuable resources and in the latter case negatively impacting the environment• Effectiveness: Inability to optimize the operation of a group of water-pressuring pumps to provide equitable water supply and to avoid equipment damages under these conditions.
