The Challenge
TeliaSonera, a leading telecommunications company, operates in two distinct markets: the Nordic and Baltic regions, and the rest of Europe and Asia. In the mature Nordic and Baltic markets, TeliaSonera services 23 million out of a total population of 31 million customers. The company's growth strategy in these regions involves offering managed services for voice and data that business customers can tailor to their needs. In the European and Asian markets, TeliaSonera only offers mobile services but is continually exploring new opportunities and expanding as appropriate. The company's managed service solutions include monitoring, support, maintenance, and security from the network level to the server level to the desktop. For the security component, TeliaSonera needed a flexible solution that could cater to a wide range of customers from small businesses to large enterprises and provide easy, cost-effective management of hundreds of firewall gateways.
The Solution
TeliaSonera chose Check Point's security solution for its managed services, the same solution it uses to protect its own networks. The company secures the perimeter of its internal office network with VPN-1 Power VSX. To prevent security breaches that could damage the credibility of its wireless subscriber network, TeliaSonera uses FireWall-1 GX, which offers comprehensive network- and application-level security for mobile services. TeliaSonera also replaced a third-party clustering solution with ClusterXL to ensure the availability of its security gateways and its subscriber network and managed service solutions for business customers. To manage hundreds of security gateways and many different policy environments for itself and its customers, TeliaSonera uses Provider-1, which consolidates and centralizes policy management for thousands of customers with different needs.
Operational Impact
  • The Check Point solution has provided TeliaSonera with a competitive advantage as the company extends its leadership in the emerging managed services market. The solution's ease of management has been critical for TeliaSonera, helping the company manage a large number of firewalls for its internal network, telecom network, and customers with limited resources. The Check Point User Center has also been an effective tool for managing software licenses, a function that was previously outsourced to a third party and was slow and error-prone. The flexibility in Check Point's licensing has enabled TeliaSonera to offer tiered services based on the bandwidth requirements of the customer, making it competitive especially for small- and medium-sized businesses, which constitute 90 percent of the company's projected market.
