A leading insurer wanted to reduce its multi-billion dollar expenditures on auto insurance claims, which is its largest annual expense. Currently, the company avoids paying out only about 0.33% of the predicted 10% of fraudulent claims. The insurer uses both manual (60-65%) and automated systems (30-35%) to flag questionable claims. These claims are passed on to the investigative case managers who read adjuster and other member notes, explore the fraud watch list, and search the web. Their existing approach cannot easily discover fraud rings or, more importantly, collusion among other fraud rings.Moreover, the investigative team typically decides in 30 days or less on whether to pay or deny a claim. This is due to heavy caseloads and expectations for a quick turnaround in claim processing in order to keep customers satisfied.

To ensure safe operation of the nuclear plant, the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations sets the performance objectives and defines the criteria (PO&C) to meet those objectives. The plant personnel manually compare each line item in the CAP report against the PO&C to evaluate the seriousness of the event. A spilled cup of coffee in the wrong place might not be too serious, while a critical pump leaking that has the potential to shut down the plant is another matter entirely. This manual process of classifying the seriousness of each item in a CAP report lies at the heart of the continuous effort to improve the safety and operation of the nuclear power plant, but requires significant time and resources.Our client needed a way to automate the classification process to increase its efficiency and to extract information from years of reported events to better understand their causes and anticipate possible adverse events.

Dr. Partho Sengupta needed a way to accurately identify disease patterns resulting from echocardiograms in order to improve diagnostics and save more lives. Specifically, he wanted to distinguish between two disparate diseases: cardiomyopathy, which directly impacts the heart muscle and often leads to heart failure, and pericarditis, which acts as if the heart is involved but doesn’t actually affect the heart. While both diseases present with similar heart conditions, the treatments are vastly different. For pericarditis, the treatment may include medication and, rarely, surgery. However, if the diagnosis is cardiomyopathy the patient undergoes medical management (i.e. a pacemaker) or in extreme cases, a heart transplant. Misdiagnosis of these disease conditions can put the patient’s life at risk and be very expensive for the hospital.Dr. Sengupta, therefore, looked to Saffron’s Natural Intelligence Platform to help his team increase the diagnosis accuracy of these medical conditions.
