Hardware
Software
Horizontal applications are standardized (e.g., asset tracking). Vertical applications are tailored to specific needs (e.g., delivery fleet management).
APIs are the market enabler for IoT. They allow users to manage devices, enable data transfer between software, and provide access capabilities.
Middleware integrates the diverse components of an IoT application by structuring communication, workflows, and business rules.
IoT analytics includes real-time or edge computing and batch analysis. Analytics can be behavioral, descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive.
Visualization solutions use dashboards, alerts, events, maps, and other tools to present easily comprehensible data to end users.
Data management solutions capture, index and store data in traditional database, cloud platforms, and fog systems for future use.
Security software provides encryption, access control, and identity protection to IoT solutions from data collection through end-user applications.
Services
System integrators link IoT component subsystems, customize solutions, and ensure that IoT systems communicate with existing operational systems.
IoT data management consultancies help to make sense of big data, decide which data to maintain and for how long, and troubleshoot IT issues.
IoT hardware consultancies provide services such as solution specification, product design, connectivity setup, and partner identification.
IoT software consultancies support the development of data analytics, visualization solutions, and platforms, as well as integration into embedded systems.
Examples of business consulting services include go-to-market design and execution, business model development, channel development, and corporate M&A.

IIC Smart Airline Baggage Management Testbed
IIC Smart Airline Baggage Management Testbed
Unlike the airline reservation systems with a limited number of global providers like Amadeus, Travelport, Sabre and Share, the ecosystem around the airports and airlines is heavily fragmented. There are no centralized systems that can unify all its stakeholders’ data such as:• Airline• Passengers• Airport vendors like baggage handling companies, fuel and catering providers• Airport tenant (shops, malls etc.)• Parking and ground transportation• Security (TSA) & Regulatory bodiesMany luggage tracking systems at the moment are simply isolated mobile smartphone applications tied into a proprietary third-party web application using such things as Bluetooth baggage tags. The challenge that the Smart Airline Baggage Management testbed is addressing is bringing together and integrating disparate and isolated airline enterprise applications and systems into a single solution to better handle smart baggage across the airline and aviation ecosystems.GOALSThe Smart Airline Baggage Management testbed, part of a broader aviation ecosystem vision, is aimed at reducing the instances of delayed, damaged and lost bags leading to lower economic risk exposure to the airlines; increasing the ability to track and report on baggage including location and weight changes to prevent theft and loss; and improve customer satisfaction through better communication including offering new value-added services to frequent flyers. The testbed is also aimed at helping airlines address the new baggage handling requirements set out by IATA in Resolution 753 requiring airlines to implement more comprehensive acquisition and delivery solutions for baggage tracking and handling by June 2018. This target is also outlined in the broader IATA 2015 White Paper titled “Simplifying the Business.”

One of the world’s largest exploration and production companies was operating as leanly as possible given the prolonged slump in oil prices. As such, an operational parameter wasn’t effectively monitored and equipment failure went unnoticed in the machines.
