With the acquisition of hardware and platform partner, AlertMe, in 2015, Centrica Connected Home was faced with the prospect of a significant shift in focus. Previously the relationship had been one of vendor-customer with AlertMe also pursuing it's own goals for expansion and licensing of its software. After the acquisition, Centrica Connected Home moved to quickly integrate the technical talent from the two companies and then to realign the development efforts of the teams.
The new common goals of product evolution, feature enhancement and international launch, presented a number of challenges in the form of a rapid scaling requirement for their live platform, whilst maintaining stability and availability. Added to these demands on the company were an expansion into new markets, and brand new product launches, including smart boiler service and a growing ecosystem of new Hive smart home devices. They even found the time to develop deeply functional Alexa skills for their products and hence be a Smart Home Launch Partner for the Amazon Echo in the UK in 2016.
WIN-911’s partner product ALERT is a key element in the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system “FabView” from Air Liquide. Air Liquide is the second largest supplier of industrial gasses in the world. This SCADA alarm notification system is specifically designed to monitor, among other things, the distribution of gas in a semiconductor manufacturing plant located in Dresden Germany. Like most operations of its type, this facility can’t afford much downtime in its distribution facility. If ALERT detects a leak in a pipeline, the system evaluates how severe the leak is and transfers the data back to the central site or home office. Once the information is back in the main office, the SCADA alert system then transcribes the data into understandable messages to which employees can respond appropriately.
The researchers know from past experience that some banks do take security of their mobile applications seriously. These are the banks the researchers work with on a daily basis. Given no application in the sample set achieved an A or B rating, it emphasises how much in the minority these banks are.
Best Buy wanted to quickly develop and deploy apps to achieve business goals. Also, create apps that are scalable and low-maintenance.
Prior to EVRYTHNG's services, it was considered an unavoidable and unsolvable problem to to rapidly test and scale applications to deliver traceability, transparency, authenticity and reward tokens to customers through distributed ledger technology (DLT).
These are serious concerns, especially if blockchains are to usher in the kind of post-industrial revolution that its advocates are predicting. Most of us can’t even protect our passwords, much less our private keys; the idea of integrating a corporation with thousands of employees with a high-tech blockchain seems about as realistic as training a cow to trade derivatives.
In 2016, Kevin Stoddard, a managing partner, had a problem. InControl’s customers required sensors on several equipment distributed across multiple sites and locations. To accomplish this, InControl needed a cost-effective solution fast. They also needed this solution to be intuitive for the equipment owners, highly secure, and broadly capable of delivering custom analytics to clients around the world.
Fuel delivery has always had some built-in inefficiency. Like most fuel and lubricant distributors, Retif Oil & Fuel followed a keep full model when restocking fuel tanks and was spending too much money topping off customer fuel tanks and making emergency deliveries. Without an accurate view of customer fuel stocks it was impossible to determine who needed fuel or how much they actually needed.
When complex systems are developed for a customer and commissioned with a particular delivery state, a data management system can make it easier to archive commissioned versions and track subsequent changes made by the customer.
Working with the AWS IoT Service Team under the EMEA IOT Lead for Amazon Web Services, Claudiu Pasa, they began a proof of concept project for migration from their existing device management platform to a specialised AWS IoT based service for new and existing devices. This deeper AWS integration enabled the replacement of other platform components with a leaner, faster Lambda based microservices infrastructure, with Amazon EC2 and Amazon RDS still playing a large part in their infrastructure for longer lived components such as data stores and platform UIs.
Additional use of integrated AWS services such as Amazon S3 data storage and web hosting, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon Cognitoand Amazon Cloudfront offer attractive benefits, when used in concert with more traditional infrastructure, such as lower latency to the customer, less scalability limitations and more resilience, allowing their engineering team to focus on systems that add value to the business such as advanced monitoring using AWS partner Wavefront, aggregated logging and application analysis using Amazon Elasticsearch Service, and cost analysis and attribution using resource tags and consolidated billing in Amazon Organisations.
New European regulations are putting more requirements on organisations to keep their customers’ data safe. The basis of the requirement is that the customer owns their data and an organisation “borrowing” that data has a duty of care over the information and needs to use “state of the art” security to keep customer data from fallings into unauthorised hands. Any lapses in that duty can result in large fines (up to €20m or 4% of turnover, whichever is higher).
Best Buy used Google App Engine as their development platform, which allowed them to relaunch their original application in only 11 weeks with roughly half the original development resources.
Thanks to the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub consumer product brands now have more choices to harness the capabilities — think, provenance or loyalty — of different blockchains while keeping data in a scalable and enterprise-ready digital identity and data management platform.
“Consumer product brands are eager to use a mix of blockchains during a product’s lifecycle, ranging from supply chain to provenance to loyalty use cases. Gaining visibility across all of these blockchains creates a significant challenge for brands,” said Dominique Guinard, CTO & Co-founder, EVRYTHNG. “In a world where blockchain solutions appear on a daily basis, rather than reinventing the wheel, we developed the EVRYTHNG Blockchain Integration Hub as a scalable way to test and connect to multiple blockchains. The EVRYTHNG platform acts as a data aggregator and intelligence and analytics layer between the different blockchain solutions — adding to the feature set available to customers.”
One new device may bring companies a half-step closer to a blockchain for industrial use. Filament has introduced the Blocklet, a penny-sized hardware dongle that will allow businesses to interface their equipment with blockchains. According to a statement from the company, the device “is designed to interact with multiple blockchains natively, giving businesses a way to attach secure hardware to their existing IoT machines allowing them to transact with each other directly.”
To demonstrate our solutions’ features, IoT Systems created a serverless infrastructure and dashboard to remotely monitor vacuum pumps on-site at semiconductor customer and deliver that valuable data and alerts to equipment owners. Our SenseQ gateway and SenseQ cloud infrastructure were integrated with InControl’s Smart Sensors to securely and reliably transfer data from behind an enterprise firewall to the cloud via Amazon Web Services (see Figure 1). Additionally, SenseQ provides quick, secure device provisioning, and scales easily for new equipment. The solution also includes dynamic thresholds for sensor and alarm types, defined by the SenseQ Engine, to differentiate routine warnings from critical failures. Finally, to meet changing customer needs, we built a configurable dashboard template with visualized equipment data. Equipment owners and operators can use the dashboard from their smartphone, tablet, or PC and receive alarms via in-dashboard notifications, email, or SMS.
After deploying the iTank solution, which runs on a secure, scalable, and robust IoT Platform, Retif personnel and customers can now view tank levels and alerts in the iTank Management Portal.
“The application is color-coded, so they simply look at the customers approaching the 25% full mark. This makes deliveries easy because they can pull up all of the deliveries in a designated area and just service those customers that meet a certain threshold in a geographic region, saving time, money and increasing efficiencies.”
The deployment expanded across more tanks in Retif’s seven state coverage region. To date, Retif has deployed thousands of tank monitors, many of which were installed by Retif personnel.
Schauer uses versiondog primarily for the versioning and archiving of customer projects. "Basically, complex logistics systems are developed for the customer and commissioned with a certain delivery state," Schauer explains. "versiondog compresses the versions and ensures that older versions do not get lost." In the past, archiving was a laborious task involving various combinations of numbers and letters. Now the intelligent data manager takes care of this automatically. As an interesting aside, versiondog only saves the changes, so the volume of data is kept to a reasonable level. "This is all particularly useful when customers also have access to the source code during a project," reveals Schauer. The Watchdog allowed Knapp to carry out online/offline comparisons at all times. "Whenever the customer made changes, we always knew about it," says Schauer. The option to directly compare programs also means that versiondog can rescue data in no time at all. When components fail, the system enables controlled and reliable restoration without delay. The data either remains on-site on the company's own servers or in a cloud environment. At Knapp, the data is stored on internal servers that are backed up on a regular basis. "This means that only Knapp and the customer have access to the data," says Schauer. [PLCs: The following devices are integrated] 3S CODESYS (Beckhoff TwinCat, WAGO, ELAU, Hitachi, Indramat), AEG, B&R Automation Studio, GE Proficy ME*, IBHsoftec S7 for Windows, IBHsoftec S5 for Windows, Mitsubishi GX Works2, Phoenix Contact, Pilz, Rockwell Automation RSLogix5, Rockwell Automation (RSLogix500, RSLogix5000), Schneider Unity, Schneider Concept, Schneider Modsoft, Siemens STEP 7, Siemens STEP 7 TIA, Siemens STEP 7 S7 for Windows, Siemens STEP 5, Siemens Simotion

It is not recommended to build security solutions in-house; rely on a proven solution that gets exposed via their broad install base, and has teams dedicated to securing mobile applications.
Since Best Buy discovered that it can launch new apps in a matter of weeks with only one or two developers, the development team has launched more than ten other web applications on Google App Engine, including:BBY Scan: A QR-code generator that allows users to manage QR codes through various URLs, and routes the requests accordingly.BBY Offer: A real-time app that captures offer data from other systems and manages and uploads offers. It works with various web and mobile apps.Universal View: An app that recognizes the site visitor’s device format (mobile, laptop, tablet, etc.) and adjusts the site view accordingly, with no lag time.
Increased food traceability (EVRYTHNG with OriginTrail) – public & immutable provenance data about raw materials, sustainability, farming methods, etc. Improved product authenticity (EVRYTHNG with Tierion and OriginTrail) – products are given unique digital identities at the point of manufacture providing a link to immutable data about factory, production, distribution and intended market.
The Blocklet is a bit like a hardware wallet, targeted and marketed for Industrial IoT use. In short, the Blocklet attempts to do for industrial blockchains what the Ledger and Trezor do for ‘consumer’ applications such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Improved situational awareness of predictive maintenance requirements
The parallel server licence means that company locations in Leoben and Sweden will soon follow suit. Whether in Sweden or Austria, it does not matter to the Watchdog. He keeps an eye on everything and makes sure no data gets lost.
