Challenge

The efforts involved in the application of blockchain technology have highlighted several technical challenges. These include the necessity of a more robust security technology that enables its safe use and faster processing speed. 

The key business challenges are: - Effective prevention of derailments - Reduction of oil spills on railroad transportation of crude oils - Alerts to first responders depending on material carried - Public safety answering points (PSAPs) and State Emergency Response Commissions (SERCs) need to know the schedule, load, and location - Flawless communication between PSAPs and first responders

Urban commute is a pain: most trips are short and existing options just don't cut it. Cars are expensive / hard to park / stuck in traffic Buses are slow / unreliable / stuck in traffic Motorcycles are heavy / require a special license Bicycles are exhausting / range-limited / slow

The assumption of trust which accompanied the early days of the internet is gone and replaced by privacy and security concerns accompanied with attitudes to risk which rise and fall across different sector and application scenarios. IoT covers a diverse range of services and products deployed in both managed and unmanaged use-cases with varying network topologies which bring different security challenges and new potential for attack.

Russia offers a unique environment for IoT connectivity compared to densely populated European countries, because of the sheer size of the Russian Federation and its sparsely-populated or empty areas where there is no GSM mobile network coverage – although these areas can still be home to industries such as mining, oil & gas production or logging. In addition, there is a specific requirement to store and process all data within Russian borders to comply with national data protection regulations.

Fleet managers are turning to predictive analytics to stay on top of maintenance and mitigate part failures before they happen. However, managing the large amount of new data generated by vehicle sensors is challenging.

Companies face falling revenues, rising infrastructure costs, and increasing risk of outages caused by inconsistent energy production from renewable sources. Less money is coming in as more people and organizations take steps to curb their energy use. Utilities are paying more to maintain and build infrastructure due to increasing complexity, resulting from the rising number of intermittent and variable renewable energy sources connected in the distribution grid. 

The client had previously deployed a one-meter-per-store monitoring program. Given the manner in which energy consumption changes with external temperature, hour of the day, day of week and month of year, a single meter solution lacked the ability to detect the difference between a true problem and a changing store environment. Most importantly, a single meter solution could never identify root cause of energy consumption changes. This approach never reduced the number of truck-rolls or man-hours required to find and resolve issues.

Solution

"FMAB" is Fujitsu's architecture concept for blockchain technology.

The FMAB concept involves the use of different layers, such as data management layer for a blockchain and a business function layer for a business. The layers are seamlessly linked such that the blockchain can be easily used in an enterprise domain. The Hyperledger Fabric Framework is implemented in the data management layer while the business function layer includes data access control and participating members management in which a consortium can be easily established and used. These function aid in solving privacy issues and long standing challenges for the technology, and they reinforce trust among the consortium participants. 

Synapt’s team developed the end-to-end Connected Railroad solution that sends alerts along with preventive measures to first responders, departments in charge. It makes use of several sensors, including accelerometers, gyroscope, seal lid openers, and motion sensors.

Wind River is now currently developing technology for Monday Motorbikes, an electric, Cloud-­connected motorbike that connects with smartphones. Their IoT platform brings the performance, security, real-­time management, and analytical capabilities necessary for extracting, combining, and analyzing device information to support real-­time decisions and systems controls. Wind River Helix helps to manage diverse devices and translate all kinds of data for travel across networks and into analytical cloud systems, where businesses and other organisations can gain insights for operational efficiencies and transformative improvements. Functions of the Cloud-­connected motorbike includes end-­to-­edge connectivity, device manage and software­ / firmware-on-the-­air. Motorbikes are connected at 28 separate data points for R&D, battery optimization, predictive maintenance and software/firmware updates. There are 2 operating nodes from the cloud, namely economy and sport modes, with a software defining the speed limits. To prevent theft, geofencing is created to shut down outside a geographical limit. IoT security in embedded devices: • Meets specs for IEC 61508 and IEC 62304 • “Designed-in” security into embedded devices w/ Wind River Operating systems • Design the concept of lifecycle security into devices -­ prevent unsecured connectivity • Wind River is working with Auto Industry to secure devices remotely (no need to bring back into the station to update) Data on battery’s performance is stored in the cloud so that users can see the bike’s battery life regardless of location. Specially­ designed batteries are structured such that cells can be replaced easily whenever it loses efficiency, hence saving the need of disposing the battery, which results in negative environmental impacts.

Only Arkessa staff are authorised to provision your M2M/IoT connections and it’s important that during the provisioning process only the services required for the solution are applied to the subscriptions / SIMs, therefore reducing the risk of unintended or malicious use.

Predixion Insight* can analyze data either in the cloud or edge devices, reducing the volume of information that needs to be transmitted. Sensors on fleet vehicles collect data about tire pressure, hydraulics, and other parts. The data is sent to Intel®-based IoT gateways on the vehicle, which then process data at the edge for immediate alerts, or send it to the cloud for longer-term analysis. The integrated Wind River Helix* Device Cloud delivers centralized remote management with a cloud-based platform.

The substation contains equipment that can be monitored by sensors and controlled by actuators. In order to have these sensors and actuators communicate with back office systems, they can connect to a gateway that performs a variety of functions. The gateway can also work in collaboration with mobile computers or process control networks. Data is transmitted between substations and the back office over wired or wireless networks. In the back office, a second gateway is the conduit to the applications, such as consumption monitoring, predictive maintenance, and data analytics running on servers in the data center.

The client deployed OutSmart’s wire-level monitoring and analytics program to gain comprehensive visibility into their stores’ energy consumption patterns With the OutSmart system they pinpointed the exact: -Location of the problem. -Time the problem occurred. -Cost of the problem condition.
