Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Turning A Stadium Into A Smart Building
Honeywell created what it called the “intelligent system” for the National Stadium in Beijing, China, turning the venue for the opening and closing events at the 2008 Summer Olympics into a “smart building.” Designed by highly controversial artist Ai Weiwei, the “Bird’s Nest” remains one of the most impressive feats of stadium architecture in the world. The 250,000 square meter structure housed more than 100,000 athletes and spectators at a time. To accommodate such capacity, China turned to Honeywell’s EBI Integrated Building Management System to create an integrated “intelligent system” for improved building security, safety and energy efficiency.

Video Networking Solution Facilitates Visual Management for Siemens DESIGO
Video Networking Solution Facilitates Visual Management for Siemens DESIGO
Incorporating video surveillance with SCADA/HMI systems is now a trend for automation applications. In general, the ActiveX Control component is required to embed video images in SCADA/HMI systems. In addition to installing the ActiveX Control components, programming is also required to properly facilitate video displays and control functions. Unfortunately, the kind of programming required can pose problems for automation system integrators because they are not familiar with video technology. Moxa is working with Siemens Taiwan Building Technologies (BT) Department to develop a userfriendly tool with graphical interface for Siemens DESIGO™ system, an up-to-date BA solution of freely programmable management and automation stations for the full spectrum of building services applications, to save time and effort with programming video related functions. System Requirements • Activate live video displays when an alarm is triggered at a remote site. • Remote PTZ camera control is required, including direction control and presets control. • Audio on/off functions

Energy Conservation and Efficiency in a Shanghai Office Building
Energy Conservation and Efficiency in a Shanghai Office Building
Conservation of energy resources through energy management solutions are receiving considerable attention in the modern office building sector. Specific questions were directed towards average monthly energy costs and energy consumption. Meanwhile administrators need to have sufficient information about the state of their facilities’ to plan energy conservation. For those reasons, new office buildings are usually embedded with advanced technology energy efficiency features to monitor their electricity and water resources to detect leaks in the building’s plumbing and facilities usage to reduce energy costs as well as providing a comfortable office environment.

Ecolibrium Energy Helps Reduce India's Energy Wastage
Ecolibrium Energy Helps Reduce India's Energy Wastage
Ecolibrium’s SmartSense solution connects sensors to energy infrastructure within a factory. It then sends energy consumption data, temperature and environmental data to a central platform. This data can be sent each minute, providing a near real-time view of energy consumption and analytics on where problems occur, what they are and recommendations on how to fix them. To work, each device needs robust connectivity that is simple to manage and consistent in pricing.

Unite Set For 10% Energy Reduction Thanks To Eseye Shoebill
Unite Students needed to find out where and when the most energy was being expended, so they could better devise strategies to reduce energy consumption. Key to this plan was a monitor that wasn’t intrusive to the business or the residents and that didn’t require releasing staff to take meter readings.

Data meets nature: One of the greenest data centers
Data meets nature: One of the greenest data centers
Green Mountain is consuming data at an unprecedented pace: 3 billion Facebook videos viewed daily; 300 hours of video uploaded to YouTube every hour. In today’s data-driven world, the uptime of colocation data centers – vast banks of servers that process everything from online videos to financial assets – is essential. Delivering secure and reliable data center services can come at an environmental cost though: energy use in data centers today contributes to 2% of global CO2 emissions. They want one colocation facility, built in a former NATO bunker buried deep within a mountain, turn the tables and use the power of nature to become one of the world’s most reliable and sustainable data centers.

Saving Energy on Campus with Energy Optimization Technology
Saving Energy on Campus with Energy Optimization Technology
The Project Universities have long put forth great effort to improve overall energy efficiency for buildings and facilities on campus. To improve electrical energy efficiency, universities have used more economical lighting systems, high efficiency motors, building management systems, and other measures. However, there is one area of electrical energy conservation that has been almost totally overlooked – the energy savings that can be realized by optimizing campus electric distribution voltages. Like many universities across the country, Murray State University (MSU) consistently looks to improve energy efficiency on campus. MSU’s 236-acre main campus is in Murray, KY, a city of approximately 18,000 residents. Founded in 1922, the university has grown from an enrollment of 202 students to 10,400 today. The University buys all its electrical power from Murray Electric System (MES), a municipally owned Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) distribution utility. In March 2011, Utilidata deployed its AdaptiVolt™ voltage optimization software on Murray State University’s campus. The patented AdaptiVolt™ software has been installed at major electric utilities and industrial facilities in the U.S. and Canada, providing significant energy savings when implementing conservation voltage reduction.

Optimizing Energy Utilization (Barcelona City Council)
Optimizing Energy Utilization (Barcelona City Council)
The Barcelona City Council manages about 2000 municipal buildings and as expected the energy expenditure is very high. Hence, the objective was to closely monitor and control how these buildings are consuming and, in some cases, producing energy. Specifically, the aim was o determine the degree of utilization of energy produced by solar thermal systems in multifamily buildings. The project consisted on controlling and monitoring 28 solar thermal systems. It was divided into three phases; a pilot phase to monitor 4 initial sites, a second phase where 16 more were added, and a third phase where the final 8 were included.

Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
Smooth Transition to Energy Savings
The building was equipped with four end-of-life Trane water cooled chillers, located in the basement. Johnson Controls installed four York water cooled centrifugal chillers with unit mounted variable speed drives and a total installed cooling capacity of 6,8 MW. Each chiller has a capacity of 1,6 MW (variable to 1.9MW depending upon condenser water temperatures). Johnson Controls needed to design the equipment in such way that it would fit the dimensional constraints of the existing plant area and plant access route but also the specific performance requirements of the client. Morgan Stanley required the chiller plant to match the building load profile, turn down to match the low load requirement when needed and provide an improvement in the Energy Efficiency Ratio across the entire operating range. Other requirements were a reduction in the chiller noise level to improve the working environment in the plant room and a wide operating envelope coupled with intelligent controls to allow possible variation in both flow rate and temperature. The latter was needed to leverage increased capacity from a reduced number of machines during the different installation phases and allow future enhancement to a variable primary flow system.
