The Challenge
A German manufacturer of commercial electric cars was faced with the challenge of ensuring that critical automotive software updates are delivered in a timely and secure manner using over-the-air (OTA) updates. The importance of prompt delivery of these updates was paramount, even in situations where Wi-Fi was not available. Given that a large fleet of these vehicles is often located in urban areas, there was a need for a solution that would not overload cellular networks. The manufacturer also needed to ensure that the software update installation would not fail under any conditions, as there was no personnel available to fix it.
The Solution
Tietoevry’s automotive team developed an over-the-air (OTA) solution that allows for the distribution of software updates over a wireless network without the need for physical access to a vehicle. This solution enables the manufacturer to remotely deliver firmware updates, patches, software, and data updates to a vehicle, eliminating the need for a driver to contact a dealer or a repair shop. The solution also guarantees the authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality of communication between vehicles and the cloud. If a software update is interrupted due to any external factors, the system is designed to roll back to the previous state from the backup. The solution also includes a special diagnosis manager to verify that the newly updated software operates as expected.
