OVERVIEW
IT department for Fraser Health wanted to implement two-factor authentication to ensure patients' privacy at the new emergency department at Surrey Memorial Hospital. This facility would be unique in that every room would be a private room, including emergency rooms.

Fraser Health Authority provides a wide range of integrated health care services to more than 1.6 million people living in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia. With more than 26,000 employees and 2,500 physicians, Fraser is one of Canada’s largest and fastest growing health authorities.
IT department chose Gemalto’s IDPrime smart cards, for security reasons and to improve overall efficiency and convenience for busy healthcare employees as they move from patient rooms to floor stations, to physician lounges.

With the IDPrime smart cards, physicians can’t leave a computing device with an open session. Unlike other options, the Gemalto solution closes a session on the terminal as soon as the credential is removed from the reader.

Cutting Edge (technology has been on the market for <2 years)
OPERATIONAL IMPACT
Data Safety - Physicians can’t leave a computing device with an open session which increases data security.
Employee Efficiency - Employees can use the cards to login to workstations, for visual identification and for physical access to secure areas.
QUANTITATIVE BENEFIT
The solution reduced operation cost by 20%.
IOT SNAPSHOT
The IoT ONE Radar indicates the mix of hardware, software and services used in an IoT solution.
Hardware
Products used by end users that contain IoT technologies. Examples include enabled equipment, wearables, hand-held scanners, and tracking devices.
Software
Horizontal applications are standardized (e.g., asset tracking). Vertical applications are tailored to specific needs (e.g., delivery fleet management).
IoT analytics includes real-time or edge computing and batch analysis. Analytics can be behavioral, descriptive, predictive, or prescriptive.
Data management solutions capture, index and store data in traditional database, cloud platforms, and fog systems for future use.
Services
System integrators link IoT component subsystems, customize solutions, and ensure that IoT systems communicate with existing operational systems.
IoT data management consultancies help to make sense of big data, decide which data to maintain and for how long, and troubleshoot IT issues.
